Today I discovered that I had painted myself into a corner by setting restrictions on the students iPods to disallow them to download Apps. This is fine, so long as you change this setting before attempting to sync with a class set of iPods. I set my two year 11 boys to this task today, and they (and me) didn’t figure this out. Now, in the peace and tranquilty of the evening, I am syncing iPods, successfully, as I pack for my weekend away in Broome. (more…)

This week, one of my students reluctantly told me of a falling out she has had with her family about her iPod. As she was recounting the story, it made me think of a movie I watched many years ago called ‘The Gods Must be Crazy’. Does anyone remember this one? Briefly, the story goes, that a tribe of bushmen are living in harmony in the Kalahari Desert. An aeroplane flies over, and one of the occupants casually drops out an empty glass Coke bottle. The bottle lands in the tribe’s land and is discovered by one of them. It is soon noted how useful this bottle is. It can play a musical note if it is blown into. It makes a useful tool for grinding the seeds and roots for meals…. soon everybody wants the bottle at the same time, and arguments ensue. One of the tribesmen, who are inherently peaceful in nature, hits another over the head following one of these scraps and draws blood. (more…)

It’s a little early in the week for blogging but I thought I might take this opportunity to share our vocabulary podcasting script lesson from today. Since the fellowship arrived at our school, there has been a renewed interest by our English teacher, which is wonderful! Today we gave all students a copy of the vocabulary podcast script (thanks to whoever devised this, I can’t recall where I found the idea, please let me know if it was you!) Mr Green has created a list of interesting words and phrases from ‘Boy’. Both of these resources can be found on the Global Community. (more…)
